TRICARE for Life Enrollment Information

Enrolling in the TRICARE For Life program is simple. There are no forms for you to submit or paperwork to complete. As long as you are already TRICARE eligible according to the Defense Enrolment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) and have purchased Medicare Part B, you are automatically enrolled and become eligible for TRICARE For Life on the first day of the month of your 65th birthday. For example, your 65th birthday is on June 15th. Your TRICARE for Life eligibility will then be effective on June 1st as long as you meet the other criteria detailed in this section.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your DEERS enrollment and eligibility information, please contact them by phone at 1-800-538-9552.

There is no enrollment fee for the program. However, beneficiaries must purchase Medicare Part B to be eligible for the TRICARE For Life Medical Benefit. There is a monthly charge to purchase Medicare Part B, which is deducted from a beneficiary's monthly Social Security payment. For more information regarding your Medicare eligibility, fees, etc. please visit your local Social Security Office or visit them on the web at

There is not a separate TRICARE for Life card that is issued to TFL Beneficiaries when they become eligible. The only card that you may need to present to providers at the time services is your valid Military Identification Card. If you do not have a Military ID Card, or your ID card has expired, please call DEERS at the phone number listed above to have the card renewed.

So itís that simple. You are automatically enrolled and ready to start taking advantage of the TRICARE for Life benefits that you have earned. Once you are confident that you have met all the criteria detailed above, the next time you go to the doctor or have medical services, be sure to notify your provider that you have TRICARE for Life.
